Summery Weekend Summary

While the Tour de France rests and takes stock of the last week it gives me a chance to cover some other bits and pieces. It would be wrong not to mention the sad news of a woman killed on London streets, the first death on a Boris Bike. Any death like this is tragic.

Cycling is a positive experience in the main and I try to focus this blog on that side of things, while not ignoring the tragedy. Cycling took up a fair chunk of what was a sunny weekend in London, whether it was riding to the park, or getting some cheeky early morning mountain biking in.

Much of this was enabled by this:

Yes, that’s right, what you’re seeing there is a bottom bracket that has finally been removed. All it took was a combination of a week soaking in GT85 (which may or may not have had an impact at all), and then the combination of a bolt to hold the tool in place, a big adjustable spanner, and the breakthrough which came in the shape of a (now slightly dented) metal table leg to employ as a lever. In case you;re worried, the new one was definitely fitted with grease, and a slightly narrower width feels even better to ride.

This allowed a bit of this, which is me determined to make the most of the summer:

As you get to know local trails it’s fun to explore and play with them. This ride was the opposite way round from the way I’ve ridden the route before and possibly better for it, with downhills made fun and fast and a nice mix of interesting bits slotted together. I even inadvertently lost one bridleway and found myself on a highly entertaining woodland network of singletrack that I might get myself lost on again. Fast (surprisingly so looking at the speeds) and dusty it was a great start to the weekend in woodland letting the sun through the leaves. It was a big smile ride and might become a staple to de-stress after a week in all weathers (although I’m not denying that sunshine made it even better.

Elsewhere there was this (which is definitely not a generic introduction to a video I saved for you but have forgotten what it’s about!).

Oh yeah, that’s right, Mount Etna. Should probably take my Caldera there…
