North London Rides

Hertfordshire. It’s not a classic mountain biking county.

There are no mountains for a start. However, what it does offer is some off road riding within easy reach of North London, and that’s what makes it useful.


London is home to a huge number of people, and among them are frustrated mountain bikers who are aching for a countryside fix despite all the city has to offer. Riders in South London have the option of the excellent and well publicised Sussex Hills and further into the Downs and West London offers access to the Chilterns and beyond, but those of us in North London have been largely ignored.


The idea behind this guide was based in a challenge to drive for no longer than half an hour from my home inside the North Circular and find some proper riding that would keep me sane until those opportunities to hit the real hills and trail centres. Conveniently the whole area is covered well by railways that usually shuttle commuters into the city and can be used to escape from the smoke as well.
